WALKING ROUTE THROUGH CÓRDOBA'S HISTORIC CENTRE

   The route begins in Plaza de las Tendillas, Córdoba's urban centre and starting point for understanding the city's evolution from ancient Corduba to the later Christian city. Here you'll also be introduced to the figure of the Gran Capitán and one of the square's most recognisable features, its clock with guitar chimes.

   From there, the route enters historic centre streets such as Calleja de la Hoguera, a former azucaque (dead-end alley) that allows explanation of Andalusian urbanism: narrow streets, irregular layout and spaces designed for protection from the heat. In this area you'll also learn about the former Mezquita de los Andaluces and characteristic details of Córdoba's courtyards.

   The walk continues through Plaza del Cardenal Salazar, linked to the former hospital that today houses the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, and past the Capilla de San Bartolomé, a Mudéjar chapel built in the heart of the Jewish Quarter following the events of 1391. Then you reach the Zoco Municipal, a former palace converted into a craft space, where the tradition of Córdoba's Patios and crafts related to filigree and leather are introduced.

   In the Calle Judíos area you'll find the Sinagoga (Synagogue), the Casa Sefarad and the statue of Maimónides, one of the most important intellectual figures born in Córdoba. The route continues towards the Puerta de Almodóvar, one of the best-preserved historic gates in the city walls, known in the Muslim period as Bab al-Chawz or Walnut Gate.

   The route also passes through Calleja del Salmorejo, where Córdoba's gastronomy is introduced, and past the Baños del Alcázar, remains of the ancient caliphal hammam. From there it links with the area around the Monumento a los Enamorados, dedicated to Wallada and Ibn Zaydun, and with the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos, a space that allows discussion of its evolution from earlier uses through to the period of the Catholic Monarchs and the Inquisition.

   The final part reaches the Triunfo de San Rafael, a monument dedicated to the guardian archangel of Córdoba, with views towards the Puente Romano and the Guadalquivir surroundings. The free tour ends at the exterior of the Mezquita-Catedral, where an introduction to its historical phases is given, from the construction under Abd al-Rahman I to the Christian cathedral built within it. It's a panoramic visit, without monument entries, designed to tour the historic centre from outside and understand which places you can visit in greater depth afterwards.
